Published April 6, 2018 at 01:39PM - http://www.bendbulletin.com An opioid shortage affecting how hospitals care for patients has reached veterinary clinics and how they sedate pets during surgery. Since last year, less opioid medications have been manufactured because of concerns about the oversupply of the addictive drugs. And production facilities for opioids such as morphine and Dilaudid have shut down because of damage from the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico and floods in Texas in 2017. Hospitals, and now veterinary clinics, have to stockpile the sedatives they have, and are turning to alternative medications. The effect is...

2018 Legislative Session and 2017 Interim The IVMA spent much of the legislative interim working with the Idaho Board of Pharmacy regarding a major re-write and cutting of its current rules and regulations. As part of the re-write, the BOP was looking to make major changes to its current fee structure. As the IVMA had worked hard to protect the BOVM in 2017, it was imperative that members not be hit with another fee increase during the 2018 legislative session. Through several conversations with BOP staff, we were able to...

By Jeremy Downing/Press Release | Posted: Fri 4:38 PM, Mar 09, 2018 Cheyenne, Wyo. - A Cheyenne horse has tested positive for rabies, adding to the four cases of skunk rabies found in Laramie County so far in 2018, reported by the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory in Laramie. Many people associate rabies in domestic animals with dogs and cats and only consider these animals for vaccination, said Myrna Miller, veterinary virologist with the WSVL. “But in Wyoming, cattle are the most common domestic animal diagnosed with rabies followed by horses, dogs and cats,” she said. The WSLV determined 11...

National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) Update: For those uncertain about their veterinary accreditation status, that status can be verified through the following web page https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/nvap/ct_areavet.   The last name and veterinary National Accreditation Number (NAN) must be entered to access this information. Remember that veterinarians wishing to continue participating in the NVAP must renew their accreditation every 3 years by submitting an application for accreditation renewal and completing supplemental training.  APHIS Approved Supplemental Training (AAST) modules for accreditation renewal are available on-line at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/nvap/ct_aast.  Unfortunately, due to budget limitations ending a government contract, RACE-approved CE credit for these...

Dogs in the greater Bay Area of California began experiencing an outbreak of CIV H3N2 in December 2017, which has quickly expanded locally and regionally into other states...

It is my pleasure to introduce the IVMA’s new One Health Committee!  For those unfamiliar with the concept of One Health, the premise is that animal health, human health, and environmental health are inextricably linked, and everyone would benefit from collaboration between those fields.  One Health encompasses MANY different topics, and the IVMA One Health Committee has decided to focus our efforts on just a few subjects to start:  infectious and zoonotic disease, continuing education coordination, and antimicrobial resistance. The committee is currently exploring several avenues to identify projects that fit...
